  4. I. CONTENTS OF THE CD 
  5. Welcome to Martini Interactive. The CD contains the following components:

  7. Martini Installer
  8. This application will review the hardware configuration on your computer and appraise you of your 
  9. computer's capacity to run this CD-ROM.  This application will also provide you with a menu of specific 
  10. software installers that we suggest for optimal use of this CD-ROM.

  12. Martini Interactive
  13. These files remain on the CD and must be viewed with a web browser. They consist of Animations, 
  14. Tutorials, Case Studies, a Glossary with pronunciations, a Search tool, and a Table of Contents that links to 
  15. the Companion Website.

  50. IV. GETTING STARTEDùINSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  51.  
  52. 1. Insert the Martini Interactive CD into the computer's CD-ROM drive.  The CD's icon will appear on your 
  53. desktop.  Double-click the CD's icon to access the "Installer" and "Start" files.  If you have all of the 
  54. necessary components then you do not need to run the installer program.
  55. 2. To verify that you have sufficient hardware, select "Installer" to launch a program that provides an 
  56. analysis of the computer's capacity to utilize the functions on the CD.  Each item being analyzed will 
  57. appear in an onscreen window followed by the message, "Passed" or "Failed."
  58. 3. If you see the "Failed" warning beside on of the hardware items then your system might had difficulties 
  59. with some aspects of this CD.  Basic system requirements are listed above and printed in the inside, back 
  60. cover of your textbook.
  61. 4. If you are missing a software component such as QuickTime version 4, you may click the appropriate 
  62. button on the right of the on-screen window to launch the installer program for the missing software.  An 
  63. Internet connection is not required to install these components.  Installers for the required components are 
  64. included on the CD.
  65. 5. Once you've determined that you have the necessary hardware and software configuration, proceed to 
  66. launch the CD. 
  67. 6. To launch the CD, click the "Start" button in the lower right-hand corner of the Martini Installer window.
  68. 7. You may also manually launch the CD by first launching your desired browser and then selecting the 
  69. "Start.html" file from the top-level directory on the CD.  If you wish to do this, you should make sure that 
  70. your default browser includes the necessary components.

  72. IV. NAVIGATING THE MEDIA EDITION
  73.  
  74. A. General Guidelines 
  75. 1. On your first time through, click the HELP button to familiarize yourself with the CD's navigation, icons 
  76. and interactivity. 
  77. 2. The Tool Pad on the left side of the window contains all of the basic resources on the CD.  These include 
  78. Animations, Tutorials, Case Studies, Website, Glossary, and Search.  At any place on the CD, you may 
  79. select one of these buttons to jump immediately to the menu of that resource.
  80. 3. Everything but the Website resource is on the CD.  This button offers a quick link to each of the chapter 
  81. of the Companion Website integrated with this CD.  An active Internet connection is required to access this 
  82. resource.
  83. 4. Let the entire document load before you start clicking! Navigation features will not work properly if the 
  84. document is not fully loaded. Many of the animations are large and may take some time to load on slower 
  85. machines.
  86. 5. Read the Help included with your Web browser for more navigation tips.

  88. B. World Wide Web 
  89. 1. The Website button will connect you to the Companion Website for this textbook. You will only be able 
  90. to access this site if you already have a connection to the Internet. If you do not, the icon will either do 
  91. nothing or it will give you an error. Do not be alarmed if you see an error, just continue. 
  92. 2. Please be aware that Web addresses outside of the Companion Website for this book may change. 
  93. Although some provide forwarding addresses, some do not. As of the publication date, all links are valid.  
  94. If you encounter a link that no longer works or that points to the wrong content then please submit an 
  95. error/feedback notice through our Companion Website.  Every effort will be made to repair or replace it 
  96. promptly.

  98. V. TROUBLESHOOTING 
  99. Problem: Memory Error. 
  100. Reason: This product requires at least 32 MB RAM, preferably more. 
  101. Action: Exit and restart the browser. Also, check that your computer has at least 25 MB of Virtual Memory 
  102. (swap file). 
  103. ----------- 
  104. Problem: Initialization Error (especially Windows) when browser is launched 
  105. Reason: There is no active network connection on the computer. 
  106. Action: Click "OK" to bypass the message. You will not be able to link to the WWW links, but you will 
  107. have no problem with files on the CD. 
  108. ----------- 
  109. Problem: When using the Tutorial, the audio is broken or stutters, or the Tutorial appears to jump in places.
  110. Reason: Some configurations will have problems with the Shockwave pieces.
  111. Action: Make sure that you've installed the more recent version of the Shockwave Player.  Version 8.0 of 
  112. Shockwave is provided on this CD but a newer version may be available by the time this CD is published.  
  113. Visit http://www.macromedia.com/ for the latest news about this plugin.
  114. -----------
  115. Problem: When clicking on a link from one page, it goes to the wrong location on the connecting page.
  116. Reason:  Some browsers do not read the links in the proper way.
  117. Action:  The correct location is somewhere on the connecting page, so you may have to browse a little to 
  118. find it OR go back to the original link and try clicking it again; most browsers will find the link the second 
  119. time.
  120. ---------- 
  121. Problem: On the Mac, double-clicking on START.HTML brings an error, or the computer freezes. 
  122. Reason: A Web browser is not installed on the computer. 
  123. Action: Open the file from the browser you have by selecting File, Open File from the menu bar. If you do 
  124. not have a browser, install Netscape Navigator and the necessary plugins (included on the CD).
  125. ---------- 
  126. Problem: Animations do not launch when clicked. 
  127. Reason: The QuickTime plug-in and/or the Shockwave plug-in are not included with your browser, or 
  128. QuickTime and/or Shockwave are not loaded on your computer. 
  129. Action: Install QuickTime 4.0 and/or Macromedia Shockwave 8.0 (included on the CD)
  130. ---------- 
  131. Problem: Animation does not have audio. 
  132. Reason: The animations are not intended to have audio.
  133. Action: No action needed. 
  134. ---------- 
  135. Problem: Within the Glossary, a gray screen with a play control bar appears after clicking on the glossary 
  136. term, but does not play.
  137. Reason: Some browsers do not automatically play the audio.
  138. Action: Click on the play button.
  139. ---------- 
  140. Problem: Within the Glossary, a gray screen with a play control bar appears after clicking on the glossary 
  141. term, overriding the page you were on.
  142. Reason: Your browser may load the QuickTime plug-in to play the audio file, thus overriding the page you 
  143. were on.
  144. Action: If you are in the Glossary section, click on the appropriate letter to return to the page. (You can also 
  145. click in the frame above the gray area, hold down the mouse and then select the back button.)
  146. ---------- 
  147. Problem: In the Tutorials section, the message "This Tutorial Requires the Shockwave Plug-In" may 
  148. appear.
  149. Reason: The Shockwave plug-in is required for the Tutorials to work.
  150. Action: Install Shockwave 8.0 (included on the CD)
  151. ----------

  153. VI. SUPPORT 
  154. If you are having problems with the software, check the "Troubleshooting" section in this ReadMe. 
  155. * For more information on QuickTime, Netscape Navigator, Flash, or Shockwave, you should read their 
  156. individual ReadMe files. 
  157. If you continue to experience difficulties, call (800) 677-6337. You can also send an email message to

  159. Our technical support staff will need to know certain things about your system in order to help us solve you 
  160. problems more quickly and efficiently. If possible, please be at your computer when you call for support. 
  161. You should have the following information ready: 
  162. - product title and product ISBN (you can find this information on the package) 
  163. - computer make and model 
  164. - CD-ROM drive make and model 
  165. - RAM available 
  166. - hard disk space available 
  167. - network connection 
  168. - detailed description of the problem, including the exact wording of the error message
